On Karlsplatz, in the center of Vienna, students (architecture, civil engineering, planning and computer science) have built the model of a city: With 70 tons of concrete they created “Hypotopia”.
Hypotopia is a fictitious model city for more than 100,000 inhabitants. The planning and construction costs would be about 19 billion euros – as much as Austria has to spend for the salvation of the Hypo Alpe-Adria bank. In other words, instead of saving the bank, you could build a whole city!
With their project the initiators want to illustrate the giant, but abstract sum and stimulate a broad public debate about bank bailout and the use of tax money.
